The French Revolution, beginning in 1789 is considered to be the foundation of Modern History as studied in Australian schools today. What better subject encapsulates the Modern History Syllabus than the historical event that begins this domain? The Reign of Terror 1792 to 1795 was a time of immense social and political change in France and the aftermath of this period were felt throughout the world.
Where there was once a reigning monarchy considered to have a divine right to rule, now there was an elite working class promoting “Equality, Liberty, Fraternity” and they decreed that equality for all men would be achieved, forging the "The Declaration of The Rights of Man and Citizen." The power of the “little people” would ultimately prevail but not without a period of intense gruesome bloodshed. The bloody nature of the not so moderate French Revolution is perhaps its major appeal to students as it offers an exciting historically important story. This topic supports historical inquiry and skills with a multitude of primary sources available for study. There are also multimodal sources that assist in the teaching of this unit of work. Refer to "Useful Links" and "Bibliography." The legacy of the 1789 French Revolution and in particular Robespierre's Reign of Terror is still seen in France and around the world today. To this day the French motto is "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" (Liberté, Equalité, Fraternité), a phrase adopted by the revolutionary leaders in 1789. |
